Filter tourney HUD on tournament type

Postby Thomas42 » Tue May 10, 2011 10:23 pm

Its a couple of years since I last asked about this, but it would be such an improvement if it was possible to filter the tournament HUD on the tournament type. The different strategy between for example Fifty50, DoN, SnG and MTT are so wide that for players I have data from many types the stat is in many cases quite useless.

I have noticed that there are a lot of players on Stars that alternate between Fifty50 and normal SnG for example.

Same goes for the buy-in levels. Comparing for example a $5 SnG with $50 SnG and the play often is very different.

I do understand that it sometimes can be difficult to auto detect the tournament type, but couldn't that simply be solved by having a sub menu in the HUD icon where I can set this? I could set a default for the type I usually play, but then also quickly change type/buy-in when needed. Even better would be if it was possible to create my own options, then I could group micro, low, normal, high buy-in levels.

I really hope that this will come at some point, have been waiting for it ever since I first bought PT2.

I will remind the development team about this request, but another technical issues is that if we split the cache into too many sections then it loses its effectiveness and that would significantly affect performance.

You're joking right? Why is this only now being raised (performance degradation) when the issue of segregated tourny HUD data has been around since Jesus was in grade school?

There is no performance problem with doing this. We already do it for the cash database when we separate it by limit.

The difficult part was that we previously had no way to separate tournaments like this. Now we can detect that kind of information, but only after the tournament is finished. Making it all work in real-time is a task we have no yet started on and would be a requirement to making this work with the cache.

As I suspected then. But wouldn't it be possible to use my suggestion in the OP, by letting me manually select the tourney type from the HUD icon?

Then also combine it with letting me create my own premade filters based on the Tournament Filters setting in PT. The options I can see useful is: Session Dates, Sites and Buy-ins from the General tab and pretty much everything from the Tournament tab. That way I can easily create premade filters for my favourite tournament types and they will be quick to apply when playing.

To make it even better, if the HUD icon could show up as soon as a table opens, then I have a minute or so to do this selection. That way I don't have to wait until the tourney already started.

Another thing I have asked for a long time ago is to be able to overlap the player filter ranges. For example be able to set them to 10-7, 7-4, 4-3 and 3-2. I haven't tried if that is working now, but I haven't seen any release notes it has been added. I realise the the problem here is to know which range to use. An idea to solve this is to have ranges like today, but add an option to let me do a +/- player count. Thus if I have the ranges 10-7, 6-4, 3-2 I can for 6-4 set that I want it to have a +1, that +1 means it will also pull in the stats from 7 players until it goes down to 5.

That to would be extremely useful, especially in SnG.

For MTT it would of course be very useful to be able to filter ranges on the blind levels. So, grouping blind levels together and filter on them, like being able to group on low, middle, high.

In MTT there is of course not so likely you will get a good sample on individual players, but at least the Multi Entry tourneys on Full Tilt makes that quite possible if you often play they same one and uses the max entries.

As you can see, I have been thinking quite a bit about how the HUD stat can be improved for tournaments. I got a few other ideas as well. It would be so great if you guys could finally make this long overdue improvements. If your interested, I am more than willing to continue discussing these, but I need to know that it will be worth my time and not be put on ice for yet more years to come.

For the record, all of these specific suggestions have been made previously and are on my list - I do hope we will be able to add them before too long but as Tarix has said, work on them has not yet begun.

Not surprised they are on the list since its is pretty much a summary of a much longer post I made on the old forum many years ago.

I do understand that its up to you to decide what is implemented or not, but for at least 4-5 years now I have heard the same thing, that its on the list for future new features, about improvements to tournament statistics, first for PT2 and then for PT3.

To be honest, I haven't really seen much HUD improvements for tourneys at all besides the integration of PokerAce HUD into PT since I started using it 2004.

During all this time, the tournament variants online has increased and there are many players that alternate between them. FPPs, and other reward programs, also make it very likely that you will have statistics for the same player that are mixed between tourney types with very different strategies. The main problem with these tourneys is that players see them as bonus (since there often is no cash buy-in to them) and they will often gamble early to either quickly get a good stack or bust out.

From Tarix's response I read that there are no performance issues with implementing this, the only issue is about auto-detecting the tourney types. However, being able to manually set this until that is possible is way better than not being able to filter it at all. I am sure every tourney player, especially SnG grinders like myself would love to be able to do this.

It would be nice to know if there are any other reasons, besides the auto-detect, that prevents this from finally happening.

The cache updates on every hand - if we can't auto detect and you have to input the type manually (it really would be great if the sites actually gave this sort of identifying tournament info in the hand history) - then the first few hands are going to be orphaned. They'd either end up in a default MTT cache, or they'd end up somewhere else in the ether - we currently have no ability to go back and edit the cache to remove specific hands that were previously added.

Think about it like this:

Tournament starts. PT3 doesn't know what the tournament is. 2 hands get played. You flag the tournament as STT Super Turbo DON. Now we have to do something with the imported data from the first two hands which has already been added to the cache.

It's a problem that I really want to see fixed but it's not trivial.

Also, there will be a lot of major improvements coming out very soon - we have made progress since the PT2/PAHUD days but it's been very incremental in a lot of ways. A big jump is just around the corner.

Thanks for the news, really looking forward to know what it is that will be released. Any chance of a spoiler?

I understand the cache updating problem. But if the HUD icon would show as soon as the table opens, then I could set the tourney type before the first hand is played. If there also is an option to "Use this setting this session" then for each new table that tourney type would automatically be selected until I manually changes it.

Since PT3 should be able to detect that previously played hands on the same table is for the same tourney type, then it would be possible to re-update the cache for those when the change is made, wouldn't it?
