Spam or real?

Postby dekauh » Fri May 27, 2011 5:46 am

I received a mail yesterday coming from [email protected]:

"Dear pokerTracker-User,
As part of academic research in poker we need as many data as possible, to be able to create
well-founded statistics and assumptions.
In order to expand the existing database, we decided to offer cash to all players willing to share their
hand histories.
We pay between 10$ and 250$ for 1000 hand histories, for further information please visit our website:

handhistory-purchase.com

The whole process is as easy as sending an e-mail and will only take 3 minutes.
Yours sincerly,
pokerftp.com staff
PS: A big thank you to the people at pokertracker.com, who decided to help us for free, in order to
support academic research!"

To me this looks like a scam but I thought I should ask here. Do you know something about it? They want to pay money and give the HH to researchers for free. Since I can not see who is financing this, it looks like a scam. Does anybody know something about it?

I guess the next question is "How did they get your e-mail and know that you were using Poker Tracker? "

They may not know that you use PokerTracker, specifically - your email address will have been registered in several poker-related places, presumably, and could have been accessed from anywhere.
