Resoring database onto SSD

Postby PokerBot » Tue Aug 02, 2011 8:35 am

1) Sorry if this is an obvious question but i am thinking of buying an SSD, and since i play MTTS i would be backing up and restoring the database. Would this work from a velociraptor to a OCZ Agility?

2) Would i get he performance gains from switching to a SSD by resorting the database?? Is there anything else i would need to do?

3) Finally i think i have back up my data base but have never restored so i cannot be sure i have done it correctly; how can i test this?

Thanks

The easiest way to do what you want is to make your backup, then uninstall PostgreSQL and reinstall it directly onto your SSD. Once you do that, start up PT3, and then click File --> Restore - then you choose the backup zip file and it'll restore your database into the new PostgreSQL installation. Having PostgreSQL installed directly on the SSD will provide a huge performance boost - and it will work on any SSD you buy without having to do anything else.

You may want to read over the Tutorial: Backup and Restore if you haven't already done so.

FWIW as long as you do not delete the PostgreSQL "data" folder from your current drive when you uninstall PostgreSQL you would be able to re-install it there and reconnect to your existing databases on the off-chance there is any problem restoring your database.
You could also try restoring your backup now - if there is an existing database with the same name (as there will be here) it will prompt you to restore to a different name so that you can test it.
