Clustering taking a loong time

Postby kevinacker » Wed Mar 25, 2009 4:55 pm

I just imported 1 million new hands into a new database. I checked the cluster, vacuum, analyze and update cache on completion options. The database has been clustering for 9 1/2 hours now. The hard drive is going, but postgre.exe only shows 2% CPU usage. Is this normal? If so, is there any way to speed things up in the future?

My config:
Pentium M 1.60GHz
Toshiba 80GB 5400rpm hard drive

How much free space do you have on your disk?
If you don't have at least as much space as the database is taking up then the cluster will take a LOT longer because rather than just writing out a neat new version of the database, it has to do it in bits which takes a lot longer.

Only about 11GB free. Will it help if I delete/move some things while the process is running or am I better off killing it and starting over?

I would let it run now - terminating these things can cause problems in your database.
Just free up some space before you do it again.
