I read up on the upgrade proceedure and understand that I must back up my DBs but I've not been able to do my large ones unless support comes up with a fix soon. What happens if I dont? Lost forever and need to rebuild them? Is 8.4 the right version or the 8.3.9x?

8.3.9 is fine and means that you don't need to backup/restore, although we would still recommend having a backup just in case of course.

I replied to your other thread about trying to get your backups to work.
You could also backup your databases manually if you do want to go to 8.4 - see the Database / PostgreSQL FAQ for directions.
