Help Moving PokerTracker 4 Database from Old SSD to New SSD

Hello,

I’m trying to transfer my PokerTracker 4 database from my old SSD to my new SSD, but I’m running into issues. My old computer literally crashed during a session, so I had the tech guys save my old hard drives and add them to my new build. Both SSDs are now part of the same system, and all necessary files (including PostgreSQL and PT4) are still on the old SSD.

I tried to run PT4 from the old SSD to back up my database, then transfer the backup files to my new SSD. However, when I attempt to run PT4 from the old SSD, it prompts me to install PostgreSQL (which is already installed on that drive), and I can’t even get to the database management section.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Attempting to run PT4 from the old SSD to back up the database (which leads to the PostgreSQL installation prompt etc.).

Reinstalling PT4 and PostgreSQL on the new SSD, which did not resolve the issue.

Deleting PT4 and PostgreSQL from the new SSD to start fresh.

I want to transfer my PT4 database to the new SSD and get everything running normally from there. I also spent several hours trying to resolve this with ChatGPT (lol), but no solution worked, so I’m hoping someone on the forum can offer more specific guidance.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much.

What is the full path to the PostgreSQL 'data' folder on the old SSD?

Thank you for your help.

There's three folders total, two in Program Files (PostgreSQL and PostgreSQL 9.30), and one in Program Filesx86(PostgreSQL 9.30).

They were all modified December 2020 which is when i built my old computer

That implies you have had multiple PostgreSQL installations so you are going to need to choose/identify what 'data' folder in which install you want to try and recover. You can check the date/size of the relevant 'data' folders.

You haven't provided the full paths so I don't know what drive that is on and the 'PostgreSQL' folder in 'Program Files' may in turn contain multiple PostgreSQL versions e.g.

Program Files\PostgreSQL\10
Program Files\PostgreSQL\12
Program Files\PostgreSQL\16

To try and connect to a specific PostgreSQL instance you need to download and install the same major version of PostgreSQL for the 'data' folder you want to connect to. So if for example you want to try and connect to:

E:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\12\data

then you would need to download and install PostgreSQL v12 to:

E:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\12

and then it should detect the existing 'data' folder. If PostgreSQL installs successfully then PokerTracker 4 should be able to connect to it with the correct port and password. Once connected you can add databases back to your PokerTracker 4 configuration via "Database -> Database Management -> New -> Browse Databases' and selecting them. Note that since you mentioned your old computer crashed during a session and assuming you weren't able to connect to the data after that then it might not be possible to recover the data if it's corrupted. You may find it easier to manually reimport from your original hand histories if you have them:

My new build has five(?) drives:

1) (c:) - the new ssd
2) (d:) partition of the new one
3) e:) system reserved
4) (f:) old hdd
5) (g:) old ssd (where the data should be)

These are the full paths (sorry for that oversight):

G:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\9.3\data
G:\Program Files\PostgreSQL 9.30\data
G:\Program Files (x86)\PostgreSQL 9.30\data

Another clarification/question: when I opened pt4 on my old ssd (g:) it prompted me to download and install postgresql on my new (c:) ssd. Should I uninstall postgresql from my ssd and start over? Isn't it better to move the three folders I described to my (c:) drive and then manually install the correct postgresql?

Idk if that makes sense I'm available for clarification. Thank you again for your help.

You need to choose which ones you want to try and recover - see my previous reply. You can download PostgreSQL v9.3 from here:

Download PostgreSQL v9.3 (64bit)

or here:

Download PostgreSQL v9.3 (32bit)

depending on whether you need the 32bit version or the 64bit version. The 'data' folder in (x86) will be the 32bit version.

Yes you should uninstall it as the port it is using might conflict with the port configured in the old PostgreSQL folders.

That's up to you. You just need to transfer the 'data' folder before running the installer.

Thank you I think I found the correct "data" folder (the largest one it's 19gb). I'm going to move it to my (c:) drive and then download postgresql 9.3. Then I'm going to download and fresh intall pt4 on my new (c:) drive. And then when I backup my database and everything is working smoothly I can delete the data from my old drive. Is that correct? Thank you for your patience with me.

I'm getting this error now after replacing the new data folder with the old (19gb) one
